Bon Odori 2005, Matsushita Shah Alam Stadium

Bon Odori is a festival celebrated by Japanese Buddhists the world over. The Chinese have a festival called the Hungry Ghost Festival and some people say this is the Japanese version. I'm not too sure about that but just do a Google for Bon Odori if you're interested.

Now there are many Japanese expatriates living in Malaysia (and I bet most of them live in Mont Kiara) so it probably makes sense for the Japanese in Malaysia to organize this annual event. Quite a few bloggers have written about the Bon Odori festival in Penang (5xMom, kiasubookworm, etc... ), the one I went to was in the Matsushita Stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor. How was the event? IT SUCKED!

Ok... to be fair it just wasn't what I expected.

I wanted:
  1. Hot Japanese chicks.
  2. Authentic Japanese food.
What I got:
  1. Japanese women of all ages... except those I'm interested in. Either too obachan or too kodomo.
  2. Food from Jaya Jusco and Isetan (to be fair there was ONE Japanese restaurant in attendance and their food was the best at the event... but still not that great lah).
Oh and the event in Penang had frickin fireworks!!! How cool is that?

Anyways we took the KTM Komuter there because we wanted to avoid the hassle of looking for a place to park our cars at the stadium. The event was very well organised with numerous shuttle busses to bring participants from the Shah Alam Komuter station to the Matsushita Stadium and back. Kudos to the organizers.

Here's ST and me on the train. We took an hour's ride on the train to get the Shah Alam.

One of the highlights of the event was the children's wresting competition :P

Here's where the dancers performed. Way up in their own stage. I couldn't break the joined hands of the revellers you see below the stage to get through to the front so no close up pics of the dancers.

Honto kawaii ano kodomo.

Grilled squid, grilled chicken, grilled quail eggs and mushrooms... yum yum.

Assorted sushi.

Octopus balls (takoyaki). I think they were missing the octopus though.

Shaved ice with green tea syrup. Simple and nice.

Just some udon. Actually didn't taste too bad.

The crowd was enormous.

Green tea ice-cream. Smooth texture, green tea flavour coupled with a milky taste make for an ice cold delight.

I had Asahi beer that night. It's so light... how do the Japanese get drunk with this?

Not actually related to the festival. Take a guess :)
