The Long Awaited Visit to Restaurant Goon Wah, Jalan Kuchai Lama

In my previous post I mentioned that I was forced to take the day off. That's because I'm based in a government office. As they were closed for the Agong's Initiation the company forced us (contract workers) to take a mandatory leave. Permanent workers got a free leave! Haihh...

Anyway I really enjoyed my relaxing day off. ST took the day off to accompany me and we started the day off with going to Restaurant Goon Wah to sample their much talked about Fish Head Noodles. I've never stopped thinking of going to this place ever since reading about them in masak-masak and I've been there several times during the weekend only to find them closed. Well the fact is they are only open from morning till lunch on weekdays! Business looks like it's very good so that's why they probably don't need to work so hard.

On to the food!

Goon Wah Restaurant, Kuchai Lama
XO Fish Head Noodles (RM 14).

The smallest serving of their Fish Head Noodles serves 2 regardless of what they tell you :) It's a generous serving of thick mee hoon served with the usual suspects. The commendable thing about this dish is probably the fried fish of which there are plenty.

The soup has been described by some food bloggers as tangy and it definitely is. Probably a little too tangy (actually more like salty) for me though because I love me my Fish Head Noodles tasting like evaporated milk. All in all a pretty commendable dish though it's not really to my taste.

There's supposed to be some XO sauce mixed in with the noodles but it's impossible to detect. One wonders if it's really in there or not but this really is a minor complaint because it doesn't need the taste.

Goon Wah Restaurant, Kuchai Lama
Stout Chicken Wings (RM12).

Thinking that a single serving of Fish Head Noodles would not be enough for a glutton and a pregnant woman we ordered an additional serving of (Guinness) Stout Chicken Wings. Tastes like you would expect it to. It's pretty good but the Fish Head Noodle serving was so big we couldn't finish the Chicken Wings and had to doggy bag the rest.

Goon Wah Restaurant, Kuchai Lama
Claypot Lou Shi Fun (RM 7) and Chau Bak Kor (RM 7).

We also ordered two packs of take away noodles for my parent's lunch. Two small serving of noodles for two persons. To my surprise it cost me RM 7 each! That's incredibly expensive for a single serving. Granted they are quite big but really... RM 7, gosh!

Anyway the Claypot Lou Shi Fun was good. Their version is dry noodles with a delicious topping of minced pork and dried shrimps. The Chau Bak Kor wasn't that great but servicable :)
